'Bloated monster headlines' that wouldn't look out of place on a hollywood movie set... Some headline writers seem to want to explain every possible thing about their product and life history in the headline alone.
Here's a typical 'bloated headline' example. Normally it'd be written in blood red ink, but that's too much of a physical assault on your eyes so I've kept this example black...
"At last, After Years and Years of Sleepless Nights and Thousands of Arguments With My Wife I've Finally Cracked The Code and Turned My Marriage Into 'Bliss From Heaven' So I Want To Share My Secrets With You and Help You Stop All Arguments In An Instant And Keep Your Wife Forever Smiling"

"Gary Bencivenga, one of the greatest copywriters alive, stated that the three words 'Oh Yeah! Really?' are the three most important words in your sales copy..." |
"Oh Yeah? Really?"
Gary Bencivenga uses those three words to measure his headlines and sales copy. Anytime he thinks that a prospect might utter them when reading something he's written he knows he's got to rewrite things...
Is the above monster, 53 words without a break, believable, easy to read? - Not at all... But people often use headlines like that... Now take a look at an abbreviated, more-effective version:
"How to End Worries Over Your Marriage"
You can see how this headline is believable and offers a promise of true advice... "How to End..." is a very powerful and effective way to attract someones attention and make them want to keep on reading...
And that's all your headline needs to do - Attract attention and get your prospect to want to read the next line. Leave the actual selling of your product to later on in your sales letter.
Make your headlines exciting and believable - I'll show you how in a minute - and you'll grab your visitors attention... make him want to read more and buy your product...
Without resorting to hype... without spreading BS...
Every copywriter worth his salt asks four simple questions about their prospect before they start to write their sales letters -- these are fundamental questions -- once you understand the power of them you will do the same without a second thought.

You can see how powerful these questions are and why all successful copywriters ask them before writing a single word of copy can't you?
Now that you've got a vivid picture of your prospect it's time to start writing... When you do you will address 7 essential elements in your sales copy.
These tie-in with the four questions you've just answered about your prospect. Do this and you can guarantee you'll have an effective sales letter that produces bucket-loads of sales.
The way to maximise your sales is by making your sales letter educate, stimulate and convert... It's a simple process.

As stated earlier your headline needs to attract the attention of your reader. One of the best ways to do this is to address something that your prospect is already thinking or worrying about... To put it another way:
"Enter the conversation that the prospect is already having with himself"
It could be a worry... it could be something that he/she will get excited about - something that wakes him up in the middle of the night.
If your headline and opening copy is able to address that worry you're guaranteed to have a visitor that wants to keep on reading.

"Health... Closely followed by Quick, Easy, Love and Money... Are KEYS that unlock your prospect's wallet..." |
And you'll have no problems with this step because there are four things that everybody thinks about... Quick, Easy, Love and Money... and if you add a fifth - Health - you have an all encompassing way of beginning your sales letter.
Simply think about your prospect and what his biggest concern is right now. Then build your opening around that.... It could be that he is sick, has to take medication every day and that medication costs a fortune.
If you have a product that will help cure him for only cents a day instead of the dollars he is currently shelling out then you've two powerful points to enter into his conversation.
Build your opening around that and you've got a reader.
That was easy now wasn't it?
You captured your visitors attention by addressing his problem. Now it's natural to start solving that problem - when you announce your solution that will improve his health and save him money...
He's bound to want to keep on reading to find out more now isn't he?
Which leads naturally into the next point:
This is where you get inside the emotions that your prospect is experiencing.
He's obviously scared that he won't get better, he's afraid if he doesn't get better he'll lose his job. If he loses his job he won't be able to afford the treatment he gets and will never get better.
He's in a hopeless situation isn't he?
So, he's feeling low and pretty despserate. He needs help but doesn't know where to turn.
Then you come along... You address all these issues and prove to him that you have the ideal solution... You show him he CAN be helped... He CAN save money. In other words he CAN AFFORD to get better... if only he follows your advice... He'll be eternally grateful.
Now that you've shown that you have a solution it's time to really...
4 - Explore ALL the Benefits of Your Product
Leave nothing unturned. Show your prospect everything your product can do and how it can do it...
This is where the question of Long copy or Short copy often arises amongst sales letter writers.
Your copy needs to be as long or short as necessary to FULLY explore every benefit your product provides and... PROVE to your prospect that it delivers those benefits.
Proof can be in the form of 'to the point' succinct testimonials, before and after photos, bank statements, videos... Or whatever you need to produce to fully prove that your product CAN and will help your prospect.
After presenting this proof your sales copy needs to...
Using testimonials and stories you've proved how your product has helped others. They themselves have told your prospect the same, so by implication your prospect understands that your product will help him as well...
Further, you have shown how much money the've saved or made whilst being helped. Maybe your prospect is sick and has to keep cooling his heels inside the doctors waiting room a few times a month. If so, you could demonstrate how much time he would save by not sitting there impatiently waiting for the doctor to see him and...
Illustrate what better things he could be doing with his time... Build up the value of every benefit so your prospect really feels he has no choice but to buy your product.
Now that your prospect feels this way it is time to...
Compare the price of your product to the cost of a meal out for two, a pizza or a couple of cups of coffee at the local coffee shop - make the comparison real to his lifestyle.
So, if the prospect has to take expensive medication every day, and that medicine has side effects

"...Only xxx cents a day compared to the xxx dollars you currently spend... This means you SAVE xxxx dollars every day..."
If you have a high ticket item break the price down into days, or months. This makes it appear more affordable in your prospects eyes.
For instance an investment of only $1.50 a day seems much more affordable than $46.50 per month doesn't it?
Now that you've proved the value and benefits of your product and shown your prospect how little it will, in all reality, cost him. You need to:
Your prospect won't buy now unless he's got a good reason to. He'll defer that decision until tomorrow and you know that...
"Tomorrow Never Comes..."
So, make your offer a time-limited offer, add a bonus that will be taken away soon or promise to raise the price in a few days.

You may even want to limit the number of copies of your product that are available.
Any or all of these will give your prospect more reason to act now.
